Read it at: wordsofinterest.net! L.A.W.L.S. will return TOMORROW!
NEWS:
Ok so, I’m SURE your asking yourself WHY is he throwing in ANOTHER new comic when he’s struggling so much lately to post L.A.W.L.S. on time. Well, the answer to that is both complex and simple. L.A.W.L.S. itself is becoming more and more time consuming for me to write/draw as each strip comes. I’ve prided myself on constantly pushing myself to my own limits while drawing each and every comic… and because of that, yes, I have in fact been posting mid-afternoons rather than the night prior like I used to. This has really been bothering me lately, and I had to consider why this was happening? Well, because each strip has been taking me about 2 days to do now, which makes me feel burnt out much quicker.. and in effect has made each strip longer and harder to do. To avoid that I was considering reducing the comic down to twice a week, which ALSO made me unhappy. So, how do I deal with such a predicament?
A long time ago I started posting filler strips (before the hat fillers) in which I used clip art to relay jokes. They were really fun to do, and from that moment I wanted to make it it’s own comic… but because LAWLS was eating up all my time, I never got around it it. This whole current predicament pushed me into finally doing it because they take a quarter of the time to do!
This project not only is a bit easier for me to put together, BUT it also is really pushing me to learn how to write better. The basic premise of this strip is to pick dictionary word, read the definition and then from there write out a joke. The built in constraint forces me to really develop a stronger way to come up with jokes, the words will always be new, random, and fresh… where as LAWLS being a story, I have to follow a path, in Words of Interest, I go with what is given to me at the moment.
My final comment about this project is this, yes, some of it will be basic clip art, but a large sum of them will be original characters from my own creatures, IE. the whale and squid in LAWLS. The characters will be switched around based on which will help the joke better for that day, but all the same will start to strengthen the LAWLS universe. I’ve got a few ideas revolving around the little bean characters, TONS with the whales and squid, and a many other that will unravel over time. The one basic theme that will overlap though is that I want it to feel like a an old dictionary, so everything is gonna have a touch of “sophistication” to it. :]
Anyway, go check out tonight’s strip. It takes place IN the Headache Cafe and deals with our good ol’ friend Philip the whale and the Barkeep Squid.
LAWLS will be back TOMORROW!

So… does this mean Anhedonia Blue is being abandoned? There hasn’t been an update there in over 3 months. Just wondering.
Unfortunately, it’s gonna be pushed even further on the back burner. I have a lot of plans for it, important ones… but first I need to get better and drawing faster. LAWLS is basically an exercise in getting better at drawing, while Words of Interest is an exercise in writing. Once I feel that I can do both at a quicker paces, ABlue will return.
…it’s sorta like Motokool for Scott, it’s probably one of my favorite stories I’ve written, but I just don’t have time for it right now. :/
I apologize for it taking so long to post, but once it come back fully, I’m hoping it will be way better than before. :]
that is sad. I was really interested in where Ablue was going but I’ve stopped even checking to see if there was anything new. LAWLS is funny but Anhedonia Blue had a very promising story. Boo.
Let me say, It will come back, I promise. All of my stories have something about them that connects them to each other, so I wont ignore it forever. ^_~
When it comes back, it’s gonna be awesome artistically… I’ve learned SOOO much since I started LAWLS.
Oh no! When it comes to language jokes I probably won’t get the joke… still I’ll try figuring it out or at least laughing with you ashamedly. =(
And in the end I’ll just end up learning more English than I ever wanted to. How that is possible? Well, by now most people don’t understand me, when I’m talking english ’cause I already got this wicked vocabulary from exploring the internet – words of interest totally won’t help.
Well hopefully it will teach a word or two! I know for sure the concept will help me learn words. That’s really the point for me, I love words, they are fascinating. It’s amazing to me how unused a large portion of English words are. :]
I support this.
But you know the only reason Lawls is taking you so long is because you’re pushing the artistic details pretty far. Simpler is easier, and sometimes better. To be quite honest, I think I prefer the older style of the comic myself. While the art certainly has made advances, it’s a good idea to take a step back. This new project is a wonderful way to explore that. I’ve found it very helpful myself to taking it back on some of my own art, and I’ve made some interesting discoveries about my styles because of it.
I appreciate that.
I know for me, backgrounds have always been something i have a hard time wrapping my mind around. You want them detailed just enough to make sense of them, but not so much it takes away from the forground…. which is I can never seem to find a balance. I’m really hoping that I learn things about backgrounds while doing Words of Interest.
One thing I regret about LAWLS is that I wish I would have gone the route of a more monochromatic scheme… with the background AND maybe even with the characters. Sorta like the way Scott does Nerf This. Oh well, we live, we learn. Each project will teach me something new. One day I’ll launch a “masterpiece” project that will tie EVERYTHING I’ve learned into one place. …that’ll be YEARS from now. haha, still TOO much to learn! :]
That’s what I like about webcomics, its a place to learn and grown while your readers explore that WITH you.
Webcomics teach us so much. Like this… http://www.mspaintadventures.com/?s=1&p=000049
No NOT that… that’s pretty obvious. Don’t do that.
I have found several aspects of comic creating both in my experience of reading and attempted creating, that contrast between background and character ‘can’ be a good thing. In either direction. Not always though. Something to explore.
this is going to be an educational experiment to say the least but i feel i must let all of you humanoids know that this will makes me think of invader zim when GIR says “YOU GUNNA MAKE BUISKITS, YOU GUNNA MAKE BUISKITS, YOU GUNNA MAKE BUISKITS, YOU GUNNA MAKE BUISKITS
Haha! That made me laugh. It should be QUIT the experiment on the humanoids! ^_~
please tell me you won’t go the way of October31st’s team, and keep putting it farther and farther off, then just stopping.
O31 was one of my favorites and they just ended it. same with geist panik actually.
No LAWLS isn’t going anywhere. The point of Words of Interest is to expand the world of LAWLS a bit more while making my life a little bit easier. I’ve been really stressed lately and dealing with a lot of issues that has just made it hard for me to keep up on a three day a week schedule for a comic that requires at least 8hrs of my attention to draw. Words only takes me about 2hrs… which allows me to get more content out for everyone while also strengthening my writing abilities.
LAWLS is just probably gonna be Tuesday/Thursday for a few weeks or so. This comic WILL last (I like it too much). :]
